First Station: An Ancient Ocean
Take a look at the Megalodon teeth discovered in West Java, Indonesia. About 20 million years ago the regions that are today dry were associated with warm marine environments. Megalodon sharks were a common sight in these prehistoric waters alongside countless other forms of marine life.
Like modern sharks Megalodon always produced teeth and then lost them. Some of the teeth were later buried in marine sediments. If conditions are right burial can protect them enough to allow them to fossilize.
Then Geology Took Over
The next chapter was extremely slowly. Sediments built up. Minerals acted in conjunction with buried materials. The forces of geology changed landscapes, and submerged habitats became land. Indonesian specimens found in West Java’s Miocene Bentang Formation can be seen in shades of tan or gold as well as brown, red, and blue. They can also display many shades within a single tooth.
